Technical Description
This portable unit demonstrates the characteristics of the contact area in the case of Hertzian contact.
A pressure pad made of rubber is pressed against a transparent plastic plate using a lever. Plate and pressure pad are convex. In this way both circular and also elliptical contact areas can be generated.
The force on the lever is measured with the aid of a spring balance and the contact area is measured. This can be clearly seen as it is illuminated from the side by a halogen lamp.
Learning Objectives / Experiments
- Characteristics of the contact area on point contact with varying contour radii
- Characteristics of the contact area as a function of the contact force
- Influence of an additional transverse component in the contact force
